3 Ways to Make Sure Your Roof Is in Good Shape This Winter

Preparing your roofing system for the next few months is imperative, especially if you live in a region with extreme winter weather. After all, you’ll be relying on it to keep you and your family warm and comfortable. Below are three ways to make sure your roof is in good shape before winter arrives.

1. Perform a Visual Inspection

Doing a visual roof inspection on your own is the best place to start your roof maintenance. Pay attention to the flashings around the chimneys and vents. Take note of anything that looks out of the ordinary, including punctures, tears and bulges on the roof surface. If you have a low-sloped or flat roof, look for any ponding of water that may have built up. You can do the job yourself if you have a sturdy ladder. However, if you don’t feel comfortable with this task, get in touch with your local roofing company to come and check your roof.

2. Get Rid of Roof and Gutter Debris

Leaves, twigs and other organic matter collect on your roof and gutters often, even more so during autumn. Make sure to remove them before the winter months arrive. Clogged gutters prevent water runoff from flowing toward the downspouts and away from your property. Any standing water may freeze as temperatures drop significantly. Eventually, they pull away from their attachments due to all the extra weight. There’s also the threat of ice dams resulting from insufficient attic insulation and other issues within the roofing system.

3. Invest in Repairs

Before wet, freezing weather comes along, see to it that your roof’s issues have been addressed promptly. Take advantage of the last few weeks of autumn for inspections and maintenance to protect your roof from the threat of ice and snow. This way, you will avoid disaster and expense. Investing the time for repairs is well worth it for your peace of mind.
