4 Reasons for Wavy or Rippled Asphalt Shingle Roofs

An odd-looking roof can detract from the beauty of your home. If the asphalt shingles look wavy or rippled at first glance, it could mean one of many things.

1. Re-Roofing

Installing a new set of asphalt shingles over the old roof can lead waves or ripples. This roofing method, as it turns out, can cause moisture to be trapped between the layers. This will then be absorbed by the new shingles, resulting in ripples on the surface. To avoid this, make sure the roofing contractor you choose performs tear-offs instead of offering a re-roofing job as an option to save on costs.

2. Poor Attic Ventilation

A well-ventilated attic is a crucial component of your roofing system. It keeps your roof healthy by making sure there’s no heat or moisture buildup inside the space. If the attic isn’t well-vented, expect rotting on the decking boards due to excess moisture. Also, since heat can’t escape properly, the sun-exposed shingles get baked on both sides, causing them to ripple.

3. Wind damage

Strong winds can lead to asphalt shingle roof surfaces looking rippled. If there are no creases or cracks on your affected shingles, your roofer will only smooth it down and adhesive will be reapplied. Otherwise, they’ll need to be removed to make way for new shingles.

4. Manufacturer Defects

A wavy or rippled asphalt shingle roof can be due to a manufacturing defect. For this problem, all you have to do is to inform your roofing contractors about it. They will be able to inspect the problem and then replace the materials as stated on your roof’s existing warranties.
