4 Tips on Finding the Right Roofing Contractor

A new roof is an important investment, one that you wouldn’t leave to just anyone’s hands. This is why finding the right roofing contractor for the job is important — but how do you find them? Read on as A1 Roofing & Construction shares tips on finding the right roofing contractor.

  1. Work with locally-owned roofers. Working with a roofer that’s also part of the local community offers many benefits: they’re more trustworthy and have shorter response times in case of roofing emergencies. They’re also more familiar with local weather patterns, which gives them more insight in terms of material selection. Plus, keeping your shortlist to just local roofers will help you save time.
  2. Ask for references and look up online reviews. The best proof of a roofer’s capabilities is in their past work. This is why you have to make time and call a prospective roofing contractor’s references. Keep the calls short and to the point by preparing a list of key questions about the roofer’s handiwork, how the roofer handled the project, and their overall impression of the roofer’s service. Online reviews on reputable sites are just as invaluable, and should complement the impression created by interviewing references.
  3. Ask for proof of license and insurance coverage. A trustworthy roofer should have no problem providing proof of their license and insurance. In Rhode Island, only commercial roofing contractors are required to have a state-issued license, while residential roofers (as well as other types of contractors) need to be registered with the State of Rhode Island Contractors’ Registration and Licensing Board. A prospective roofer’s insurance certificate should clearly indicate general liability coverage and workers’ compensation, which would serve as your protection from liability in case of property damage or worksite injuries.
  4. Pay attention during your initial consultation. Once you have pared down your list of candidates, it’s time to schedule initial consultations. Pay attention to how the roofer speaks to you — do they listen to what you want with your project or do they seem to just want to sell a new roof? Do they satisfactorily answer your questions? At the end of the consultation, you’ll be presented with a quote or estimate. Don’t be pressured into signing it. A reputable contractor will not expect you to sign unless you’re fully satisfied with the terms and conditions. Make sure the cost breakdown in the estimate is what you’ve discussed. If they seem like they’re trying to get you to sign it then and there — offering special discounts that expire by the end of the day is a common tactic — move on to the next one on your list.
