Reasons Why Your Roofer’s Choice of Screws Matters

When it comes to construction, you might think that a screw is a screw and that it doesn’t really matter what kind you end up using so long as it holds two pieces together. Wrong. In roofing, even something as small as a screw can have a huge impact on the overall quality of the job. Here’s why.

Rust

Most of us know rust as that reddish flaky coat that metals get when exposed to the elements. However, rust is the term commonly used for the corrosion and oxidation of iron and its alloys. It is caused when iron reacts with oxygen and water. This reaction is known as oxidizing.

Galvanic Corrosion

When your roofing contractor uses two different metals that don’t really like each other, galvanic corrosion can take place. If you use the wrong type of screw to use on your gutters, for instance, the material of the screw can react with the material of the gutter. Simply put, galvanic corrosion occurs when two dissimilar metals are used together and one metal corrodes due to the other.

Remember, a significant portion of your roofing components are made of metal so corrosion is a very important consideration when choosing the screws to use. A good roofing company will use screws that are compatible with your roof to avoid corrosion. For example, if you have a steel roof, then you should use zinc-coated steel screws to hold them in place.
