The Key Advantages of PVC Roofing

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is one of today’s most popular single-ply commercial roofing systems. But why is it so popular?

What Is PVC Roofing?

PVC  is an extremely versatile and durable plastic that’s used for manufacturing many household items. You can find various kinds of vinyl products on the market, from toys and phonographic records to building materials, such as plumbing pipes.

As a roofing material, PVC is similar to other single-ply roofing systems, with one layer of material installed on the roofing substrate. Depending on the roofing requirements, the PVC sheets can be installed loose-laid and weighed down with ballast, or adhered to the substrate using fasteners and/or adhesives. PVC seams are heat-welded to ensure a proper seal.

Key Advantages

PVC roofing has the following key advantages:

Reflective – PVC is typically sold as white sheets. White or light-colored roofing helps reduce heat from the sun that a dark-colored roof would absorb. This feature can help reduce indoor cooling requirements, which can result in significant energy savings.

Recyclable – PVC roofing is 100% recyclable. This means it won’t generate as much waste during replacement and would only take up minimal space in a landfill.

Sustainable – PVC roofing has a long lifespan and is easily repairable. Punctures can be patched while loose seams can be heat-welded back. New penetrations like vent pipes can be accommodated without needing to replace the outer roof layer.

Durable – PVC roofing withstands climatic extremes and, with proper care and maintenance, has a comparatively longer lifespan.

Lightweight – Certain types of roofing systems are not built to support heavy roofing material like built-up roofing (BUR). PVC roofing makes it possible to install a new roof on such structures without compromising structural integrity. It also provides more installation headroom if the roof requires additional insulation.
